Frequently Asked Questions

What makes seaweed products unique?

Besides being rich in minerals and prebiotic fiber, seaweed offers a wide range of benefits from building material to skincare, nutrition, and culinary purposes. Environmental benefits kick in when one can replace fossil fuel intensive ingredients/products with  seaweed derived ingredients/products.

Do seaweeds sequester carbon

Seaweeds can (through absorbance of CO2 in water as carbonic acid H2CO3) assimilate CO2 indirect into biomass. So yes they temporarily fix carbon. It all depends then what you do with the seaweed. Some small part will be transported to the deep sea (but no one knows how much) . Mostly seaweed (wild or cultivated) act as a carbon sink, especially in places where there was no seaweed before. However in the end you harvest your seaweed when it will be processed into something else. An LCA (life cycle analysis) will show you how much carbon you have taken up, or in harvesting and processing have emitted. Our preliminary results have shown you need to grow more than 10 kg seaweed per meter of line to be carbon neutral (in a temperate system, Alaria and or Saccharina). If you use your seaweed to replace some fossil fuel intensive product, that's where you can make some positive gain! (plastics for example).

How do you ensure sustainability in seaweed harvesting?

We work closely with local seaweed farmers and follow sustainable harvesting practices to preserve the marine ecosystem and support coastal communities.
